AREDNFCACS is actively researching the most practical way to deploy AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network) technology in Fremont County.  AREDN uses ham radio frequencies to greatly increase wireless networking range using the same fault-tolerant design as the Internet.

Project Objectives

Emergency Communications and Civil Defense are the primary goals of the project.  Determining the most practical ways to support local emergency communications and to support civil defense goals as well.  To that end, some of the specific objectives include:

  • Designing mesh network nodes for both permanent and mobile installation.
  • Configuration of mesh nodes for autoconfiguration and minimal maintenance requirements
  • Use low-cost, reliable commercial equipment
  • Define the standards for integration of useful services for emergency personnel and civil defense.

Possible Deployment Types

  • Permanent Nodes to facilitate webcams and weather stations to aid with fire control efforts
  • Permanent road-side "Call for Help" poles installed in areas known to have poor mobile phone coverage
  • Mobile nodes with webcams for use during public events (parades, etc.) to aid emergency personnel to see problems more quickly and be able to respond accordingly.
